The Region

Gastronomy

With a reputation for the best food in France, the gourmet flavours of local produce prepared by traditional recipes, that have been handed down though the generations, ensure the authenticity of the regional dishes. Specialities include fois gras, duck preserves, confit and magret of duck, garlic, cheeses and melons. All are complimented by the hues and aromas of armagnac, the aromatic local aperitif called floc, and the wines of Madiran, Cotes de Saint–Mont and Cotes de Gascogne.

Culture

The region enjoys a varied culture that centres round local villages and small towns. Music festivals and village fetes are in abundance. Jazz in Marciac, the running of the bulls in Vic Fezensac, the Equestrian festival in Tarbes, to name but a few. Discover the heritage of the Gers and visit the historic cities of Toulouse, Auch and Lourdes. Marvel at the cathederals, monuments, churches, museums and buildings of architectural interest that have survived the centuries.

Activities

The Gers is an ideal location for all year round activities, such as golf weekends, cookery courses, painting classes, cycling or walking tours, horse riding, armagnac or wine tastings, antique hunting and farmers markets. With ski stations less than an hour away, take in a day’s skiing, snow boarding, or a mountain husky tour. Or take the easy route over the Pyrenees in a hot air balloon. For the more adventurous there’s quad biking, rafting and canoeing, or try your hand at flying lessons.
